just a fyi: 'open the kimono' was in regular use back in '93-'94 in
silicon valley. Marc Porat (ex of Apple, CEO of General Magic)
probably used it once a day.

NOT TRUE! This expression was being used in Australia at NEC where I worked
back in the early 80's! Proberbly has something to do with the hidden agenda's
used by the Japanese during negotiations. ie. you show me yours and I'll show
you mine!

I've been amazed that this is seen as "new." It was usedregularly in business
in the late 60s, as a more colorful alternative to "lifting the skirt" - the
obvious reference to tantalizing a prospect with a peek at the wares. My
guess it that it traces to management who, at that time, had backgrounds in
the Korean and WWII fronts.
